City Tourism
Duisburg is one of those cities that surprises you once you actually spend time there. Sitting at the meeting point of the Rhine and Ruhr rivers, it is home to the largest inland port in Europe and rather than hiding that industrial heritage, the city has turned it into something beautiful.
Guided Tours Organized by the Conference
Both organized tours are available on Tuesday (01. Sep. – 16:00) right before the Conference Dinner and Wednesday (02. Sep. – 13:30) after the conference closing. You can book these tours in ConfTool. The spots are limited, so be quick!
Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord
The best example for the evolution from industrial imprint to cultural heritage is Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord where: a former ironworks transformed into a sprawling public park where old blast furnaces are lit up at night, climbing walls wind through old ore bunkers, and divers explore a flooded gasometer. The park is industrial history reimagined as a place for wonder. For the tour we organized for you, a guide or a former steelworker, who can share firsthand stories of what it was like to work there, will take you on a guided exploration of this striking landmark of industrial culture.
Duisburger Zoo
The second tour we organized, is a guided visit of the Duisburger Zoo, one of the biggest Zoos in the Ruhr Area known for its lovely koalas and the dolphinarium. The Zoo is right next to the campus Duisburg and definitely worth a visit.

Beyond that, Duisburg has a lively, down-to-earth character that is definitely worth to explore beyond the guided tours.
Duisburger Innenhafen

The Innenhafen (inner harbor) area blends old warehouses with modern architecture, cafés, and museums, including the excellent MKM Museum Küppersmühle for contemporary art. Also a harbor tour by boat is highly reccomended.
Sechs-Seen-Platte
Duisburg is also wonderfully green for an industrial city, with the Sechs-Seen-Platte (Six Lakes Plateau) offering hiking, swimming, sailing, and cycling right on the doorstep.
Tiger & Turtle – Magic Mountain
Another great spot you can visit is Tiger & Turtle – Magic Mountain, a walkable sculpture shaped like a roller coaster perched on a hill in Duisburg-Angerpark, offers stunning panoramic views over the city and the industrial Ruhr landscape, especially magical when it’s lit up at night.
